ROCKY ARRIVES, TOGETHER WE SOLVE
1
WIDE — Chapter opens. Memory floods back in the dark lab. Three realizations, one after another.
WIDERYLANDRECKONING
"Oh. Okay. I see how it is." — Ryland alone on stool. The full truth arriving in sequence.
2
CLOSE — Ryland on stool, face blank. "I went from nearly hysterical to…this. This is worse. I'm numb."
CLOSERYLANDNUMB
The hysteria of Ch23 gave way to something quieter and far worse. He is a coward.
3
MEDIUM — Ryland sits motionless, elbows on lab table. Arms limp. Staring at nothing.
MEDIUMRYLANDDESPAIR
"I'm a coward." He knew he wasn't the best hope. He made peace with that. But not this.
4
INSERT — Three realizations in sequence. The third is new. "But I didn't know I was a coward."
INSERTRYLANDSELF-KNOWLEDGE
#1 known and accepted. #2 made peace with. #3 arrived just now — worst by far.
5
CLOSE — The panic memory replays. "Sheer, unadulterated terror. Not for Earth or humanity. For myself."
CLOSERYLANDTERROR
"I remember the emotions. I remember that feeling of panic. I remember it all now. Utter panic."
6
CLOSE — Lips barely moving. "God damn you, Stratt." A mumble, not a shout. Pure bitter.
CLOSERYLANDBITTERNESS
"What ticks me off the most is that she was right. Her plan worked perfectly."
7
MEDIUM — Ryland processes. Infuriating truth: she was right. He's going to give it his all anyway.
MEDIUMRYLANDACCEPTANCE
"What else would I do? Let 7 billion people die to spite Stratt?" Of course not.
8
MEDIUM — Rocky is already in the tunnel above. Unknown how long. Sonar sense — he could see everything.
MEDIUMRYLAND / ROCKYSILENT WITNESS
"He didn't have to come — he could see everything from the control room. Still, there he is."
9
TWO-SHOT — Rocky: "You are very sad." Ryland: "Yeah." One syllable carries everything.
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYMUTUAL SADNESS
"I am sad also. But we not be sad for long. You are scientist. I am engineer. Together we solve."
10
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "How?!" Arms thrown up. Rocky calm above: "Together we solve."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYRESOLVE
The chapter's thesis stated simply by Rocky. Not a question. A certainty.
11
WIDE — Rocky clicks along ceiling tunnel toward Ryland. "Taumoeba survive outside Adrian air. Adrian life is very strong."
WIDERYLAND / ROCKYLOGIC CASCADE
"Astrophage and Taumoeba from same biosphere. Probably evolve from common ancestor." The idea is forming.
II
CO2 PLAN, CENTRIFUGE DEBATE
12
MEDIUM — Rocky above Ryland. "Astrophage and Taumoeba from same biosphere. Common ancestor. Adrian life is very strong."
MEDIUMRYLAND / ROCKYCOMMON ANCESTOR
Ryland cranes his neck up: "True. Astrophage can live in vacuum, on surfaces of stars."
13
DIAGRAM — Astrophage and Taumoeba share a common ancestor. Both evolved from Adrian biosphere.
DIAGRAMBIOLOGYPANSPERMIA
Rocky: "Adrian life is very strong." They've survived vacuums, stellar surfaces, fuel tanks.
14
TWO-SHOT — Rocky: "You have idea already. Not question. I know you. Tell idea."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYPARTNERSHIP
Rocky reads Ryland completely. Not a guess — a fact. Two minds already synchronized.
15
MEDIUM — Ryland: "Start with pure CO2 at 0.02 atmospheres. Then add gases one at a time. Find what kills them."
MEDIUMRYLANDEXPERIMENT DESIGN
"Venus, Threeworld, and Adrian all have lots of CO2. That's the baseline. Add one gas at a time."
16
DIAGRAM — The test chamber spec. Clear xenonite, gas valves each side, three temperature modes.
DIAGRAMEQUIPMENTRYLAND
"I need you to make me a test chamber. Xenonite, valves, temperature control. -100, -82, -50°C."
17
TWO-SHOT — Rocky: "Yes yes. We are team. We fix this. No be sad." Skitters off to build the chamber.
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYTEAMWORK
Warmth / teamwork atmosphere. Rocky already moving. This is what partners do.
18
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "After thrust ends, let's use the beetles for centrifuge mode." Rocky: "Dangerous."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYDEBATE
"Beetles arranged for thrust, not rotation." The engineering reality check begins.
19
WIDE — "We're like a paddlewheel boat with a broken rudder." Ryland's crude but accurate metaphor for the Hail Mary.
WIDERYLANDMETAPHOR
No gimbals, no servos. Beetle thrust controlled by duration only. The nautical ship could at least angle its sails.
20
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "I'll lie flat in the storage room." Rocky: "How operate controls? What if unconscious?"
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYPROBLEM SOLVING
"Then you cancel the rotation and I'll wake up." Rocky shimmies back and forth: "No like."
21
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "Human thing." Rocky: "Understand. Not actually understand, but…understand."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYINTERSPECIES BOND
How do you explain impatience to someone who lives 700 years? You don't. You just say "Human thing."
22
MEDIUM — Ringo spins the ship. Ryland flat on storage floor, g-forces brutal. Stays conscious.
MEDIUMRYLANDSPIN-UP
"The g-forces during the spin-up were rough—I won't lie. But I stayed awake long enough." Ringo selected, John/Paul offline.
III
ROCKY’S TANK, NITROGEN KILLS
23
WIDE — Time skip. Seven days of science. Rocky's xenonite tank: enormous, flawless, fish-tank-scale.
WIDERYLAND / ROCKYTIME SKIP
"Xenonite doesn't care if there's a bunch of air pressure on a large flat panel. Bring it on, says xenonite."
24
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "Watch me pull a Taumoeba out of a hat!" Rocky: "Do not explain. You have findings?"
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYANTICIPATION
Rocky climbing up from control room. "His voice is just a touch higher in pitch than normal."
25
MEDIUM — Rocky hunkered down, all limbs extended toward Ryland. "Tell findings!" Barely hiding excitement.
MEDIUMROCKYEAGER
"He tries to hide it, but his voice is just a touch higher in pitch than normal."
26
DIAGRAM — Experiment 1: Adrian air + Astrophage slide. Taumoeba thrive, eat everything. Equipment validated.
DIAGRAMEXPERIMENT 1BASELINE
"My first experiment was Adrian's environment. The Taumoeba survived and ate it all. No surprise." ✓
27
DIAGRAM — Taumoeba limits. -180°C to +107°C. Near-vacuum OK. CO2 required — no CO2 = dormant then dead.
DIAGRAMTAUMOEBA LIMITSSCIENCE
"They need carbon dioxide. At least a little bit of it." CO2 in fuel tanks comes from dead Astrophage.
28
TWO-SHOT — Rocky: "Dead Astrophage put CO2 in tanks. Defects. Mutations. Some die. Those provide what Taumoeba need."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYCO2 SOURCE
"Not all cells are perfect." Dead Astrophage dissolving into the fuel = the CO2 supply. Elegant.
29
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "Wait. I have more. Much more." Rocky mid-retreat, stops dead. "More? Good."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYTENSION
The big reveal incoming. Rocky freezes — all attention pivoting back to Ryland.
30
DIAGRAM — Venus test. CO2 only: Taumoeba alive. Add 3.5% nitrogen: ALL DEAD. In seconds.
DIAGRAMNITROGEN KILLBREAKTHROUGH
"Then I added the nitrogen. And the Taumoeba all died." — "All die? Sudden?" — "Yes. In seconds."
31
TWO-SHOT — Rocky carapace shoots up in shock. "Nitrogen…unexpected. Nitrogen harmless to Erid life!"
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYSHOCK
"Nitrogen required by many Erid life." — "Same with Earth. Earth's air is 78% nitrogen." — "Confusing."
32
WIDE — The paradox. Earth: N2=78%, fine. Erid: ammonia-based, N compounds essential. Taumoeba: tiny N2 = instant death.
WIDENITROGEN PARADOXMYSTERY
"If all life evolved from a single source, how can nitrogen be critical to two biospheres and toxic to a third?"
33
MEDIUM — Rocky: "Hopeless. Cannot change Taumoeba." Ryland: "Well…maybe we can change Taumoeba."
MEDIUMRYLAND / ROCKYPIVOT
Rocky's carapace is sunk. Ryland holds a tablet. The pivot sentence arrives quietly.
IV
EUREKA, TEN TANKS, TANK THREE
34
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "Do Eridians have diseases?" Rocky: "Eridian body is closed. Seal opening. Boil with hot blood. Kill all."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYERIDIAN BIOLOGY
"No immune system — just heat. An Eridian body is a nearly impenetrable fortress."
35
DIAGRAM — Two biological defense strategies. Eridian: sealed fortress, boil invaders. Human: borderless police state.
DIAGRAMCOMPARATIVE BIOLOGYCONTRAST
"An Eridian body is a nearly impenetrable fortress. But a human body is more like a borderless police state."
36
TWO-SHOT — Ryland explains antibiotics. Rocky: "Amaze. Erid no have this. Other life on Earth makes medicine?"
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYANTIBIOTICS
"Other life evolved defenses against the same diseases. They emit chemicals that kill disease but not human cells."
37
MEDIUM — Rocky's carapace lifts. "Disease evolves defense against chemical that kills it." The analogy clicks.
MEDIUMROCKYUNDERSTANDING
"Antibiotics work well at first. Then over years, less and less effective. Disease learns to survive."
38
WIDE — EUREKA. Ryland points at tank: "Taumoeba = disease. Nitrogen = antibiotic. Breed nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba."
WIDERYLAND / ROCKYEUREKA
"We don't need to understand why nitrogen kills Taumoeba. We just need to breed ones that survive it."
39
TWO-SHOT — Rocky: "Understand! Make environment barely deadly. Breed survivors. Make more deadly. Repeat, repeat, repeat!"
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYEUREKA
"Yes!" says Ryland. "Good!" He slaps the top of the tank. The plan is born.
40
MEDIUM — Ryland: "Ten tanks, smaller. 1ppm gas control. Sample port." Rocky: "Yes! I make! I make now!" Bolts.
MEDIUMRYLAND / ROCKYACTION
Ten tanks in ascending N2 percentages. The evolution machine is designed. Rocky already gone.
41
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "Why does Eridian food have THALLIUM in it?!" Rocky: "Healthy." / "Thallium kills humans!" / "Then eat human food."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYDARK COMEDY
"Food experience not that important." — "Hey. To humans, food experience is VERY important." — "Humans strange."
42
WIDE — Ten tanks arrayed. Tank Three highlighted. "Out of 23 generations, Tank Three made strongest strain nine times. She's lucky."
WIDERYLANDPROGRESS
"Yes, Tank Three is a 'she.' Don't judge me." Currently at 0.6% nitrogen. Taumoeba-06 in progress.
43
MEDIUM — Ryland checks Tank Three. Current best: 0.6% nitrogen tolerance. Target: 8% for Threeworld.
MEDIUMRYLANDPROGRESS
"The plan is working. Our Taumoeba are developing nitrogen resistance." 0.6% of 8%. Long road ahead.
44
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "17 hours to Blip-A. Spin down centrifuge now." Rocky: "Agree. You go to storage locker."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYPREPARATION
"Do not forget control panel with long extension cords." Everything secured in lab. Agreed.
V
ORBITAL INSERTION, COURSE TO BLIP-A
45
WIDE — Engines cut. Orbital insertion at 1 AU from Tau Ceti. Zero-g returns. Rocky's Blip-A is out there somewhere.
WIDERYLAND / ROCKYORBITAL INSERTION
"John, Ringo, Paul off. Velocity is orbital." The hunt for the Blip-A begins.
46
MEDIUM — Control room. Rocky in ceiling bulb, beetle controls clamped. Ryland at pilot seat. Petrovascope ready.
MEDIUMRYLAND / ROCKYCONTROL ROOM
"Rocky relaxes in his control-room bulb. He clamps the boxes to their wall mounts." Zero-g precaution.
47
DIAGRAM — Rocky's beacon plan. Blip-A fires engine every 20 min. Petrovascope watches for the flash in Petrova frequency.
DIAGRAMBEACONROCKY
"Rather than hoping we can see Taulight reflect off the ship, he just set it up to flash engines now and then."
48
TWO-SHOT — Ryland: "What's your ship's name?" Rocky: "Blip-A." / "No, what do YOU call it?" Rocky: "Ship."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYCOMEDY
"Why would ship have name?" — "Ships have names." — "What is name of you chair?"
49
TWO-SHOT — Rocky: "What is name of you chair?" Ryland: "Never mind. Your ship is the Blip-A." Rocky: "That is what I said."
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYCOMEDY
"Flash in ten seconds." Rocky wins the debate by not understanding there was one.
50
CLOSE — Petrovascope screen: background IR from Tau Ceti only. Both silent. Waiting. "Three…two…one…now!"
CLOSERYLAND / ROCKYTENSION
"Rocky and I each fall silent and stare at our respective screens." 37 seconds until flash.
51
INSERT — Petrovascope: a cluster of white pixels blinks then vanishes. "Got it." / "I not notice." Very dim. Very far.
INSERTRYLAND / ROCKYDETECTION
"Right on cue, a few pixels on-screen blink white." Rocky's sonar can't detect at this range. Human eyes do.
52
INSERT — Telescope: Blip-A is a barely-perceptible discoloration in the blackness. Taulight reflection only.
INSERTRYLANDDISTANCE
"The difference between background space and the ship is so small as to be barely perceivable. But it's there."
53
TWO-SHOT — Ryland reads angles: "Yaw +13.72. Pitch -9.14." Rocky works beetle controls, flicking them in sequence.
TWO-SHOTRYLAND / ROCKYTEAMWORK
"By flicking on and off the beetles in sequence, he angles the ship toward the Blip-A." "Angle correct."
54
WIDE — Course set. "Begin now." Beetles fire. Hail Mary accelerates at 15 m/s² toward the Blip-A. Chapter ends.
WIDERYLAND / ROCKYDEPARTURE
"Three kilometers per second. Will get to the Blip-A in an hour or so." Rocky: "Two hundred second thrust. Begin now."
55
INSERT — Tank Three, Taumoeba-06. 0.6% nitrogen tolerance. Breeding. Budding. The mission within the mission.
INSERTRYLANDTAUMOEBA-06
"The next generation might be able to go as high as 0.015%." Target: 8%. Long road. The work continues.
56
WIDE — Hail Mary in flight. Blip-A ahead. Taumoeba breeding in the lab. The two scientists heading home together.
WIDERYLAND / ROCKYCHAPTER CLOSE
"You are scientist. I am engineer. Together we solve." Chapter 24 ends with the ship burning toward Rocky's Blip-A.
