GRAVITY TEST, XENONITE PLAN
1
1.00 g
WIDE — Centrifuge control screen shows the ship diagram: two halves at full separation, spinning. The readout: 1.00 g. Ryland leans back. Rocky's xenonite zone is in the control-room floor.
WIDERYLANDROCKY1.00 g
Rocky is no longer in the spaceball. He stands in his xenonite zone bulb — a pressurised dome set into the control-room floor.
2
MEDIUM — Rocky inside his xenonite zone, stepping side-to-side, rolling the geodesic bulk of his carapace from one pair of legs to another. Testing the gravity. Ryland watches from outside.
MEDIUMROCKYGRAVITY TEST
"He steps side to side, rolling his geodesic dome one face back and forth." Not much gravity, he decides.
3
9.8 m/s² 20.48 m/s² EARTH ERID
DIAGRAM — Earth (left, smaller circle) at 9.8 m/s². Erid (right, larger circle) at 20.48 m/s². Double. Erid is a heavier, denser world — and its native inhabitants evolved to match.
DIAGRAMROCKYGRAVITY COMPARISON
"Not much gravity. Erid gravity is 20.48." Ryland: "That's a lot of gravity."
4
168 kg ~800 lbs on Erid
WIDE — Scale comparison. Left: Rocky at 168 kg in the ship. Right: Rocky on Erid at the equivalent of ~800 lbs. And he skitters around effortlessly at that weight. Do not arm-wrestle an Eridian.
WIDEROCKY800 LBS
"Eight hundred pounds and can skitter around effortlessly. Mental note: Do not get in an arm-wrestling match with an Eridian."
5
CONTROL ROOM LAB DORMITORY
DIAGRAM — Ship cross-section. Rocky's proposed xenonite zones highlighted in amber: a small floor-bulb in the control room, a tunnel up the lab side + ceiling run, and most of the dormitory.
DIAGRAMROCKYXENONITE CONSTRUCTION PLAN
"Mostly in sleep room. But tunnels in lab and small area in control room." Four to five days to build.
6
+ XENONITE
DIAGRAM — Xenonite assembly: two bags of liquid components + mixing = rigid transparent xenonite block. Like epoxy — but stronger than anything humans can make.
DIAGRAMROCKYXENONITE = EPOXY
"Xenonite parts in bags in dormitory. Liquids. Mix. Become xenonite." Like epoxy. But really, really strong epoxy.
7
NOW 14 YRS 72 YRS EARTH ERID
DIAGRAM — Two timelines. Earth: 14 years to most humans dead (red fill). Erid: 72 years before big problems (green). The thermal mass difference. Earth is getting cold fast.
DIAGRAMRYLANDEARTH URGENCY
"In fourteen more years, most humans will be dead." Erid has seventy-two. All about thermal energy storage.
8
MEDIUM — Rocky's carapace raised high, two claws clicked sharply together in front of him. The Eridian equivalent of clapping hands and declaring: 'Right. Let's go.' Ryland reacts.
MEDIUMROCKY"THEN WE WORK NOW!"
"He clicks two claws together. 'Then we work. We work now! Learn how to kill Astrophage.'"
9
MEDIUM — Rocky: carapace raised high, animated, urgent. Ryland: leaning toward the xenonite divider, arms out toward it. Both pressed close to the wall between them. The plan is set.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKYURGENCY MATCHED
Rocky is as motivated as Ryland now. The Eridian understands: Earth has 14 years. They work now.
10
ERID hot + massive + thick atm EARTH cooling fast
WIDE — Size comparison: Erid (left, massive, deep atmosphere) retains thermal energy. Earth (right, smaller, thin atmosphere) loses heat rapidly. The same Astrophage dimming hits both — but Erid has buffer.
WIDERYLANDTHERMAL MASS EXPLAINER
"Erid is much hotter than Earth. Much larger. Much thicker atmosphere. Erid has a whole lot more heat stored in its air."
11
MEDIUM — Rocky completely still. Limbs lowered. This is a serious intonation — monotone. He has just understood that Earth has 14 years. He processes it in silence. Ryland watches.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"UNDERSTAND. STRESS. CONCERN."
"His voice becomes monotone. It's a very serious intonation." The alien equivalent of falling silent.
12
MEDIUM — Rocky's carapace raised, one claw pressed against the xenonite wall — the closest he can come to a fist on the table. Ryland's hand on the other side. Both ready to work.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKYTHE WORK PACT
"Then we work. We work now! Learn how to kill Astrophage. You return to Earth. You explain. Save Earth!"
13
CENTRIFUGE MODE
WIDE — Hail Mary spinning in the void, centrifuge deployed, two halves of the ship separated on their cable. Tau Ceti glows in the distance. The mission begins. The work starts now.
WIDERYLANDROCKYTHE MISSION BEGINS
The ship spins. The alien and the human share a pressurised spacecraft. They have work to do.
II
"I'M NOT GOING BACK", FUEL GIFT
14
MEDIUM — Ryland in the pilot seat, leaning back. Quiet. He delivers the news simply. No dramatics. Rocky is in his zone nearby. The one-way nature of the mission, stated plainly.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"I'M NOT GOING BACK"
"I'm going to have to explain this eventually. May as well be now. 'I'm not going back. I'm going to die here.'"
15
MEDIUM — Rocky's carapace visibly shudders. A full-body tremor. This is not an expected response. The Eridian is shocked. Ryland watches, unsure what the reaction means.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKYCARAPACE SHUDDERS
"His carapace shudders." The Eridian equivalent of someone physically recoiling from terrible news.
16
EARTH NO RETURN FUEL
WIDE — Diagram: Hail Mary stuck at Tau Ceti (no return fuel), small probes launching toward Earth carrying findings. The mission design: one man stays, his data goes home.
WIDERYLANDONE-WAY MISSION
"My ship only had enough fuel for the trip here. Tiny probes will return to Earth with my findings. But I will stay here."
17
MEDIUM — A still beat. Rocky's carapace returned to neutral — the most solemn he ever is. Ryland's hand near the xenonite wall. Four simple words from the alien: a quiet moment of recognition.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"YOU ARE GOOD HUMAN"
"You knew this when you left Earth, question?" "Yes." "You are good human." The highest praise Rocky can offer.
18
MEDIUM — Rocky raises one claw sharply. Stop. Wait. Ryland is mid-sentence talking about sampling Astrophage. Rocky has a question first.
MEDIUMROCKY"WAIT."
"Wait." He holds up a claw. "How much Astrophage you ship need for return to Earth, question?"
19
MEDIUM — Rocky completely matter-of-fact. Ryland: sitting bolt upright, jaw dropped. The alien has just casually offered to give Ryland enough fuel to get home. Two million kilograms.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"I CAN GIVE"
"I can give. I have extra. Can give that much and still have plenty for my return to Erid." Said as if offering a cup of sugar.
20
2,000,000 kg Hail Mary original fuel tank
WIDE — The fuel figure visualised. 2,000,000 kg of Astrophage — an entire mission's worth, given casually by an alien whose ship simply ran more efficiently than planned.
WIDERYLANDROCKY2 MILLION KG
"It's a lot of fuel! Let me repeat it: two million kilograms. Two times ten to the sixth power!" Rocky: "Yes. You can have."
21
CLOSE — Ryland slumped back in his seat, panting. He almost hyperventilates. His eyes well up. This is the moment he realises he might live. Three years of assuming death — undone in one sentence.
CLOSERYLANDTEARS OF JOY
"I fall back into my seat. I pant. I almost hyperventilate. My eyes well up. 'Oh my God…'"
22
MEDIUM — Ryland crying tears of joy, arms rising. Rocky in his zone watching quietly. The alien who casually gifted a man his life is now watching him process it. 'I am happy. You no die.'
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"LET'S SAVE PLANETS!"
"I break down, crying tears of joy. I'm going to live!" Rocky: "I am happy. You no die. Let's save planets!"
23
WIDE — Control room. Ryland arms raised, laughing and crying. Rocky in his zone, carapace raised high — all limbs expressive. Tau Ceti visible through the viewport. Two species. Two planets. One mission.
WIDERYLANDROCKY"LET'S SAVE PLANETS!" — CODA
The most joyful moment of Chapter 16. Both alive. Both motivated. The fuel problem is solved. The science begins.
24
FLASHBACK — CARRIER FLIGHT DECK
WIDE — FLASHBACK. The carrier's flight deck. An inbound helicopter over the sea. Science team and crew assembled on deck. The most important helicopter arrival in human history.
WIDEFLASHBACKCARRIER
Half the Chinese crew, all the science team, Stratt and Ryland — everyone is there to see humanity's saviors arrive.
25
STRICT SEPARATION RULE
WIDE — Two helicopters landed separately. Three astronauts from each. Stratt's strict rule: no crewmember shares a vehicle with their backup. One crash cannot kill humanity's last hope.
WIDECARRIERTWO HELICOPTERS
Blue jumpsuits, national flags. The prime and backup Hail Mary crews. No vehicle sharing — ever.
26
MEDIUM — Stratt and Ryland standing side by side watching the astronauts arrive. Ryland's arms folded. Stratt impassive. The debate about her 'all-men' guidelines is about to start.
MEDIUMSTRATT+RYLANDWATCHING
The debate: Stratt wanted all heterosexual men. She got overruled. "I never would have thought a woman would be so sexist against women."
III
FLASHBACK: CARRIER, STRATT DEBATES
27
MEDIUM — Stratt rigid, Ryland pointing at her with barely-contained exasperation. The sexism debate: her 'all-men' guidelines. She's matter-of-fact about it. He's indignant.
MEDIUMSTRATT+RYLANDSEXISM DEBATE
"I never would have thought a woman would be so sexist against women." "It's not sexism. It's realism."
28
WIDE — Three prime crew walking toward us in formation: Yáo (centre, commander), Ilyukhina (left, already grinning), DuBois (right, quiet). Blue jumpsuits, national flags. They are what humanity looks like at its best.
WIDEYAO+ILYUKHINA+DUBOISPRIME CREW ARRIVES
Chinese man, Russian woman, American man. The people who might have flown to Tau Ceti. Deck crew starstruck.
29
MEDIUM — Ilyukhina launching herself at Stratt with a full embrace. Stratt completely rigid. Ryland and Dimitri watching with barely-concealed delight.
MEDIUMSTRATT+ILYUKHINAILYUKHINA HUGS STRATT
"Hello!" Ilyukhina lunged forward and hugged Stratt. "I'm here to die for Earth! Pretty awesome, yes?!" Stratt: does not hug back.
30
MEDIUM — Yáo bowing formally to Stratt. Perfect English, slight accent. Every word deliberate. Commander energy. Stratt receives it without much warmth — he was the best, so he was picked.
MEDIUMSTRATT+YAOYAO'S BOW
"Ms. Stratt. It is an honor to finally meet you." Stratt: "You were the most qualified. No thanks required."
31
MEDIUM — DuBois and Stratt. A quiet handshake. He spoke so softly as to be almost inaudible. Three doctorates — physics, chemistry, biology. He won't let her down. He means it.
MEDIUMSTRATT+DUBOISDUBOIS — QUIET
"Ms. Stratt. Thank you for this opportunity. I won't let you down." DuBois: three doctorates. The kind of quiet that is actually confidence.
32
WIDE — The informal mixer on the flight deck. Everyone milling. DuBois finds Ryland among the crowd. Two scientists, two men who will each do extraordinary things, introduced as equals.
WIDERYLAND+DUBOISTHE MIXER
"I believe you're Ryland Grace?" In the middle of the cocktail mixer, DuBois turns to Ryland. A quiet moment in the chaos.
33
MEDIUM — Stratt pointing at Ryland. He is gobsmacked. He's going to be training the two smartest scientists in the world on his own subject — Astrophage biology.
MEDIUMSTRATT+RYLAND"YOU'LL BE TRAINING THEM"
"I'm glad you're impressed. Because you'll be training DuBois and Shapiro." Ryland: "Me?!"
34
MEDIUM — Stratt gesturing across the deck to Annie Shapiro. Ryland cranes his neck to look. Shapiro: the woman who invented three enzymes from scratch for her PhD thesis. Nobel-track.
MEDIUMSTRATT+RYLANDANNIE SHAPIRO
"Over there is Annie Shapiro. She invented a new kind of DNA splicing that's now called the Shapiro method." Ryland is genuinely in awe.
35
WIDE — Flight deck. Yáo is absolutely the star — the crowd gravitated to him. Even the deck crew who should be working. DuBois stands a little apart, quiet among his admirers.
WIDEYAO+DUBOISSTARSTRUCK CREW
"They were absolutely starstruck — especially with Yáo." The Chinese crew were especially drawn to their countryman.
36
MEDIUM — Ryland leaning toward Dimitri, both watching Ilyukhina's exuberant behaviour in the background. Dimitri smiling with rueful affection.
MEDIUMRYLAND+DIMITRI"ARE ALL RUSSIANS CRAZY?"
"Are all Russians crazy?" "Yes. It is the only way to be Russian and happy at the same time." "That's…dark." "That's Russian!"
37
CARRIER — FLIGHT DECK
WIDE — The flight deck from distance. Six astronauts in a line at the horizon. The science team watching. The whole world balanced on these twelve people. Two helicopters gone.
WIDECARRIERSIX ASTRONAUTS — WIDE
Best of the best. The prime and backup crews for humanity's last mission. Six people willing to die. Ryland will train them.
38
1.00g
CLOSE — Back to the present. The centrifuge screen blinks green: gravity at full. Ryland smiling at it. He's been smiling for three days. He hasn't stopped since he found out he won't die.
CLOSERYLANDBACK TO PRESENT — ALL SMILES
"It's been three days since I found out I won't die and I'm still all smiles." The green light. Gravity restored.
39
Tau Ceti e 162 km/s
WIDE — Tau Ceti system. Six planets catalogued by Rocky over 46 years. The Petrova line runs from the star outward to Tau Ceti e — the third planet, richest in CO₂. That's their target.
WIDERYLANDROCKYTAU CETI SYSTEM SURVEY
Rocky mapped this entire system from the Blip-A. Eridians are as curious as humans. Takes months. Not Star Trek.
IV
COMA GENES, NAMING ADRIAN
40
MEDIUM — DuBois, eyebrow raised. Ryland, jaw dropped. DuBois just mentioned Ryland's coma-resistance markers — which Ryland didn't know he had. Stratt never told him.
MEDIUMRYLAND+DUBOISCOMA RESISTANCE REVELATION
"I hear you have the coma-resistance markers, just like me and the rest of the crew." "I do?" "They didn't tell you?"
41
MEDIUM — Ryland shoots a look across the deck at Stratt. She's busy talking to Bob Redell and Commander Yáo. She has no idea what DuBois just said. But Ryland knows now.
MEDIUMRYLANDRYLAND'S FURY AT STRATT
"I shot a look over to Stratt. She was busy talking to Embezzler Bob and Commander Yáo." It's his DNA. Someone should have told him.
42
MEDIUM — Ryland grumbling. DuBois listens, then smoothly changes the subject. They're birds of a feather — both coma-resistant, both scientists, both about to do impossible things.
MEDIUMRYLAND+DUBOIS"IT'S MY DNA"
"It's my DNA. Someone should have told me." DuBois deftly changes the subject. "I am looking forward to learning about the Astrophage life-cycle."
43
MEDIUM — Control room. Rocky in his transparent floor-bulb, visible from above through the xenonite. Ryland unclipping his seatbelt to stretch. Centrifuge humming. Three days of smiling.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKYROCKY IN FLOOR BULB
"Rocky stands in a bulb of clear xenonite in the floor of the control room." He built his zone — it's everywhere now. Like a hamster Habitrail.
44
CONTROL ROOM LAB DORMITORY
WIDE — Ship cross-section showing Rocky's xenonite Habitrail network: floor bulb in control room, tunnel up the lab side + ceiling run, entire dormitory converted. He built all of it in 4 days.
WIDEROCKYHABITRAIL NETWORK
"He'd spent days building up the Eridian Zone throughout the ship. It's like having giant hamster Habitrails running everywhere."
45
TAU CETI e
MEDIUM — Rocky shifting weight in his floor bulb. Ryland stretched out. Rocky delivers his review of the planet's name: boring. Tau Ceti e. Not a name. A catalogue number.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"BORING NAME"
"Boring name." Rocky says. Ryland: "Then give it a name." The back-and-forth begins. Neither wants to name it.
46
♫♩♪♫
MEDIUM — Rocky announces the name: a chord sequence. Four musical notes. Ryland at the laptop, entering it into the dictionary spreadsheet. He asks what it means.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKYTHE NAME — MUSICAL NOTES
"Okay. Name is ♫♩♪♫." A sequence of musical notes. Ryland dutifully enters it. "What does it mean?"
47
MEDIUM — Rocky matter-of-fact. Ryland's eyes go wide. Rocky named the target planet for his mate — the one he may never see again. He just reveals it casually, as if it's obvious.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"NAME OF MY MATE"
"It is name of my mate." Ryland: "That little devil! He never told me he had a mate!" Eridians don't kiss and tell.
48
42 Earth days hermaphrodite — mate for life
WIDE — Eridian reproduction diagram. Two Eridians lay eggs next to each other. One egg absorbs the other. Single viable egg hatches in 42 Earth days. Hermaphrodites. Mate for life.
WIDEROCKYERIDIAN REPRODUCTION
They mate for life. Rocky's mate is waiting — or maybe has taken a new mate. "I gone a long time."
49
MEDIUM — Rocky's carapace dipped slightly. The quiet admission: his mate may have moved on. 46 years is a long time, even in a 689-year life. Ryland looks sad.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"MATE POSSIBLY HAS NEW MATE"
"Unknown. Mate possibly has new mate. I gone a long time." "Sad." "Yes, sad. But necessary. Must save Erid."
50
Adrian
MEDIUM — Ryland at the laptop, entering 'Adrian' as the English word for Rocky's mate — and thus the planet's name. A casual choice. Why not? Rocky heads off to eat.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"ADRIAN"
"Adrian. Human word is 'Adrian.'" Rocky: "Understand." Then heads down his tunnel. Ryland: "Where are you going?" "Eat."
51
MEDIUM — Rocky descending his amber xenonite tunnel. Ryland scrambling down his own ladder in parallel. Ryland wants to watch Rocky eat — an orifice has never even been visible before.
MEDIUMRYLANDROCKY"EAT?! WAIT!"
"Eat?! Wait!" Ryland has never seen Rocky eat. Never seen an orifice other than the radiator vents on top. He runs to keep up.
52
WIDE — Cross-section. Two parallel vertical routes: Ryland's ladder (left) and Rocky's xenonite tunnel (right). Both descending simultaneously toward the dormitory. Science waits below.
WIDERYLANDROCKYPARALLEL DESCENT
"I scamper down the ladder into the lab. He's already halfway down his vertical tunnel."
V
ROCKY'S FULL FEEDING SEQUENCE
53
AIRLOCK
WIDE — Dormitory cross-section. Left 25%: Ryland's tiny corner — bed, toilet, robot arms. Right 75%: Rocky's domain — bags, makeshift workshop, life-support unit, large xenonite airlock. Divided by a clear wall.
WIDERYLANDROCKYDORMITORY — TERRITORY
"All I have these days is my bed, the toilet, and the robot arms." Rocky got most of the space. He also built a large airlock for passing objects back and forth.
54
CLOSE — Rocky in his zone, one forelimb reaching into an open soft-sided bag. He extracts a sealed food package: the exterior is rough and rocky-textured — armored like his own carapace skin.
CLOSEROCKYFOOD PACKAGE
"He opens one of his many soft-sided bags and pulls out a sealed package." Rocky-material on the outside. Ryland peers in from his tiny corner.
55
CLOSE — Rocky's claws tearing rocky-armored chunks off the food package. Each chunk peeled away reveals red-brown meat underneath — unmistakably meat, just like Earth meat. Same basic biology.
CLOSEROCKYROCKY ARMOR TORN OFF — MEAT REVEALED
"He tears the rocky chunks off the food and exposes meat underneath. It's definitely meat — it looks just like Earth meat." Same proteins. Same solutions to the same problems.
56
CLOSE — Rocky methodically shredding the meat into tiny morsels with multiple claws. The packaging stays flat on the floor — not a piece touches the floor itself. Rocky armor discarded to one side.
CLOSEROCKYSHREDDING THE MEAT
"He tears the meat up into small chunks. At all times, he keeps the food on the packaging. It never touches the floor." More thorough than any human would be.
57
MEDIUM — Rocky steps deliberately away from the food (left on its packaging). He goes to the other side of the compartment, retrieves a flat cylindrical container from a sealed box.
MEDIUMROCKYRETRIEVES CONTAINER
"He steps over to the other side of his compartment, leaving his food where it was. He pulls a flat, cylindrical container from a sealed box and places it under his thorax."
58
CLOSE — Rocky over the pan. The abdominal armor SPLITS — a vertical crack down the lower carapace. Fleshy interior exposed. Silver blood drips. Then: the gray blob drops. It lands with a splat.
CLOSEROCKYTHE BLOB DROPS — SILVER BLOOD
"The rocky armor on his abdomen splits and I see something fleshy rip open underneath. A few drops of shiny silver liquid dribbles out. Then a gray blob plops out of his body into the pan."
59
MEDIUM — Rocky seals the pan and puts it back in its box. Then turns back toward the food pile, abdominal area still not quite closed. Methodical. Clinical. Like any animal eating.
MEDIUMROCKYPAN SEALED AWAY
"He seals the pan and puts it back in the box it came from. He returns to the food." The waste first. Then the food. Monostome.
60
WIDE — Rocky flipped entirely onto his back, spread-eagle. The abdominal hole STILL OPEN — dark, fleshy, gaping. Limbs limp at sides. Two arms reaching toward the food pile, about to drop morsels in.
WIDEROCKYFLIPPED BELLY-UP — HOLE OPEN
"He flips over onto his back. The gaping abdominal hole is still open. I can see inside. There's soft-looking flesh in there." No chewing. No teeth. No moving parts.
61
EXTREME CLOSE — The abdominal opening from directly above. Fleshy walls visible in layers, silver blood on the rim. No teeth. No moving parts. Two morsels of meat falling in. Pure cavity.
CLOSEROCKYMORSELS DROPPING IN
"He reaches over with a few of his hands and grabs some choice morsels of food. He brings them to his opening and drops them in." Slowly and methodically. No chewing. Nothing moves.
62
CLOSE — Feeding done. Rocky's limbs fall completely limp, still belly-up. The abdominal hole beginning to close — a scab-like material forming. He looks dead. Ryland resists the urge to ask.
CLOSEROCKYLIMBS FALL LIMP
"He finishes the last of his meal, then lets his arms fall limp. He lies spread-eagle on the floor, immobile." Ryland: "I resist the urge to ask if he's okay."
63
CLOSE — Rocky still belly-up, panting. The radiator vents on top of his carapace working hard — heat waves visible. His body dumps the heat from the hot circulatory system. Ryland waits.
CLOSEROCKYHEAT DUMP — PANTING
"His breathing speeds up. It always does when he first falls asleep. His body has to dump all the heat in the hot circulatory system." After a few minutes, he stops.
64
WIDE — Dormitory. Rocky belly-up, completely motionless, abdominal armor folded back seamlessly shut. All six limbs slack at random angles. Ryland tiptoeing out with his notebook. The food coma is complete.
WIDERYLANDROCKYFOOD COMA — RYLAND SNEAKS OFF
"Once he gets past the panting phase, I've never seen him wake back up in less than two hours." Rocky looks dead. Ryland goes to write up his notes.
65
ERIDIAN DIGESTIVE CYCLE Step 1: Subject defecates from mouth. Step 2: Armor-armored food unwrapped w/ claws Step 3: Meat shredded fine on packaging Step 4: Flip. Abdominal split. Morsels in. Step 5: Enforced food coma. ~2hrs min. monostome!
WIDE — Ryland's notebook. The heading: ERIDIAN DIGESTIVE CYCLE. Step 1 in bold red: 'Subject defecates from mouth.' The rest of the steps follow. Ryland stands beside it, grimacing with scientific satisfaction.
WIDERYLAND"STEP 1: SUBJECT DEFECATES FROM MOUTH"
"Yup. That was pretty freaking gross." He's a monostome — same orifice for both ends. Ryland wanted to study alien biology. He got his wish.
